Hyderabad Public School (HPS), Begumpet is a co-educational school affiliated with the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). Founded by the erstwhile Nizam in 1923 with five students and six teachers, the school was known as Jagirdar College, a institution to exclusively educate the sons of jagirdars and other aristocrats.
It was renamed as Hyderabad Public School in 1951 after the abolishment of the Zamindari system. The class I-XII school is managed by the Hyderabad Public School Society.

The school campus is sited on a sprawling 150 acre campus with buildings which reflect the Qutub Shahi style of architecture. Today the school has a strength of 2,800 students and 102 teachers.

Campus Details

Sited on a sprawling 150 acre campus, the schoos heritage buildings reflect the Qutub Shahi style of architecture. The campus hosts playgrounds for cricket, football, hockey etc. The school offers well-maintained tennis courts and a 400 m athletics track.

The school library is well stocked with more than 22,000 volumes including vernacular books and subscribes to 12 newspapers besides 35 magazines. There are computers with internet facility within the library that has a seating capacity for 50 people.

The well-equipped, spacious and well-ventilated physics lab can accommodate more than 40 students. The lab has a dark room with a number of ray boxes and electrical fittings to conduct light experiments. The chemistry lab has state-of-the-art audio-visual facility and a mini library. The biology lab is also well equipped and has an online virtual dissection facility for students who find real time dissection disturbing. The computer lab has 40 personal computers.

The campus also hosts arts and crafts rooms, carpentry, book-binding, music and dance sections, audio-visual rooms for primary and senior sections,an infirmary and a State Bank of India branch.

Admission Details

Students are admitted into class I. Admission notification is published in English and vernacular newspapers during October/November every year. The application forms can be collected at the school office on payment of Rs.300 and producing the original birth certificate of the student.

Admissions to class XI begin in Mayand are based on marks obtained in the class X board examination.

Admissions in other classes than those mentioned above are subject to vacancies and are given after the candidate has cleared an entrance examination. Admission into class X & XII is possible only if the previous school is affiliated to CISCE.

Age criteria:
Students seeking admission into class I should be between 5 and 6 years of age and the cutoff date for calculation of age is May 31 of the year of seeking admission. Age for the other classes is calculated accordingly.

Academics Details

The school is affiliated with the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations and prepares students to write its class X ICSE and class XII ISC exams. Classes I-VIII subjects include English, mathematics, general science (physics, chemistry, biology), history and civics, geography, language-I (French, Hindi, Telugu, Urdu), language-II (French, Hindi, Sanskrit, Telugu), computer science, value education and general knowledge. SUPW, arts, craft and yoga are also part of the school curriculum.

The senior school offers environmental education and optionals (in lieu of Language-II) like art, commercial applications, computer applications, economic applications, home Science, physical education and yoga.

HPS encourages and provides opportunities for its students to learn rock climbing, horse riding, martial arts, modern dance, learn musical instruments such as violin, guitar, tabla and keyboard, clay modeling, calligraphy and yoga. Students can also become members of the gardening, nature and space clubs.
