Modern High School for Girls, committed to developing creative and independent individuals, was founded by Mrs. B.M. Birla on January 3 1952. The School was set up at 28, Camac Street initially with Mrs. Violet Clarke as the first Principal. In 1953, the senior school moved to a new location 33, Theatre Road (now Shakespeare Sarani), Calcutta (now Kolkata). The junior school remained at the same location.
The foundation stone for the present school building was laid by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy on December 9, 1957 and in March 1960; the senior school was transferred to the present building at 78, Syed Amir Ali Avenue.
The school is well–equipped and provides facilities. In addition to the regular classrooms, MHS has specially equipped rooms for the teaching and learning of subjects like Art and Craft, Planetarium, Computer Centre, Laboratories, Junior and Senior Libraries, Sports Ground, and Multipurpose Hall. External resources where required are used to supplement in-house facilities.
The school has a total of 119 teachers in the Junior and Senior Sections. They are all well qualified, trained and experienced. There are specialised teachers for Art, Home Science, Sanskrit, and Computers etc.
